  • Another Fork and Pallet balancing act

Another Fork and Pallet balancing act

Spotted by a reader in Wigan; a man using a forktruck and pallet for working at height where a scissor lift would be far more suitable. A classic that still occurs in way to many industrial or commercial establishments, in this case it looks as though the man has used a set of rolling steps to access the pallet? Probably meaning that he is the fork truck driver as well as the one up above. Although the step up is quite a distance. As usual, there is no protection from falling and given that

  • Scissor Death Highlights Need for Training

Scissor Death Highlights Need for Training

The death of a man in the UK trapped between the guardrail of the scissor lift and overhead ducting has, according to Health & Safety Executive, highlighted the lack of training. Colleagues of the trapped man – Shaun Scurry, 39 – were unaware of how to use the emergency down controls on the scissor lift – a Skyjack owned by AFI – and unable to release him and bring him down. Southwark Crown Court in London was told that Scurry was trapped

  • Oops - Brussels' Grand Place Damaged

Oops - Brussels' Grand Place Damaged

Workmen using a boom lift in Brussels’ Grand Place have damaged the façade of the Maison des Ducs de Brabant with the lift’s basket on Friday March 1st, while working on the lighting of famous square. The men moved the platform too close to the stone balustrade knocking it onto the roof of the building but it was unspecified whether to be technical error, or human. Fire crews were called in to make the building safe and used a crane and rescue platform. No stone or tile

  • Lucky Escape as Boom Tips

    Lucky Escape as Boom Tips

Two men had a lucky escape last month in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia after a culvert collapsed under the wheel of the boom lift that they were using. The men were using a Genie 45 to work on the façade of a downtown building. Sometime towards midday the two drove the elevated machine forward to the point where one wheel lined up over a communication culvert which gave way. The wheel dropped into the hole and jammed before the machine reached its tipping

  • Glasgow head bangers

    Glasgow head bangers

Spotted in Glasgow, Scotland on Friday March 1st – two men using a long ladder to work at height – but how! The two, employed by a general builder, are working at a height of between six and seven metres, one has climbed off the top of the ladder onto a narrow ledge. The second man, looks as though he is being coaxed to do the same, but appears to be holding on the ladder for dear life? We assume that the ladder is footed by the van which is good, the angle looks about

  • Third world? No, Devon!

    Third world? No, Devon!

Spotted in the upmarket resort of Salcombe in Devon a contractor using the most rudimentary access equipment to install steelwork.

The three or four men are working on a small development of two and three storey high luxury homes – Salcombe Heights, being developed by Acorn Blue. The contractor, Kingsman Construction of Poole, has clearly decided not to waste any money on additional access equipment to install the upper level steelwork, having invested in traditional tube and
